OMEC webinar on the role of nuclear energy in the Mediterranean and its development prospects
On 8 March 2024, the OMEC organised a new event of the OMEC webinar series, with the aim of exchanging on the role of nuclear energy in the Mediterranean and its development prospects.
The development prospects for nuclear energy in the Mediterranean region can vary from one country to another. Some countries, such as France, have a long history of nuclear power and will continue expanding their nuclear capacity. Other countries, like Italy, have considered or are considering nuclear energy programs, but their progress may depend on various factors, including political will, public opinion, and regulatory frameworks. In the South Mediterranean, nuclear plants are planned in several countries like Egypt, Türkiye, Jordan and Morocco.
The role of nuclear energy in the Mediterranean region, like in many other parts of the world, has been a topic of interest and debate. The Mediterranean region is diverse, with countries that have varying levels of economic development, political stability, and energy needs. There are various challenges and concerns associated with the development of nuclear energy in the Mediterranean. These include concerns about nuclear safety, nuclear proliferation, radioactive waste management, and public acceptance. Addressing these issues is crucial for the responsible development of nuclear energy.
