Geopolitics of energy strategies in the Euro-Mediterranean region
On 17 October 2022, OME made an intervention on “the role of South Mediterranean gas in the EU supply security” at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) and Consiglio Nazionale dell’Economia e del lavoro (CNEL) joint conference dedicated to the “Geopolitics of energy strategies in the Euro-Mediterranean region”.
Dr Sohbet Karbuz, Director of Hydrocarbons and Energy Security at the OME, underlined that the EU would be hard pressed to fully compensate Russian gas. The potential additional gas export from the South Mediterranean region could be up to 40 bcm in the mid to long term, and even more (50 bcm if Southern gas corridor is included). However, this will require overcoming several challenges. In this sense, there is a need for a better coordination and cooperation between the EU and South Mediterranean region.
