Energy Security Perspectives & Risks
The European Union and Turkey are natural allies when it comes to energy security, as both are energy poor large consumers. The Energy Union rules conceived in the EU guarantee the energy security needs of Turkey too. With its strategic position on many energy supply routes Turkey is ideally position to serve as a European energy hub and center between the Middle East and the Caspian on the one hand-side, and Europe and the Black Sea on the other. Turkey has done a lot in transposing the energy acquis of the EU. But wider geopolitical considerations have recently soured EU – Turkey relations, hurting also the Energy Union prospects. The two sides need to set aside political disagreements and improve dialogue and understanding on delivering the technical requirements of the Energy Union. This will be beneficial to both. The current report presents an analysis of the risks along the way and provides recommendations how to strengthen the EU – Turkey energy dialogue.
