WEFE (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems) Nexus in the Mediterranean Webinar
The recent WEFE (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems) Nexus webinar, organized by OMEC in collaboration with MedECC, brought together around 50 participants to address pressing environmental challenges in the Mediterranean. The discussions emphasized the need for cross-sectoral collaboration and highlighted how isolated technical solutions can negatively impact other components of the WEFE nexus. A key concern raised was the projected reduction in energy availability, particularly in hydropower, due to water scarcity, stressing the need for more accurate energy forecasts. Attendees identified water stress as the primary environmental challenge and noted a lack of coordination among institutions as a major barrier to effective WEFE policy implementation. The webinar also underscored the importance of empowering local authorities with the right tools and knowledge to implement comprehensive policies. Experts called for more data-driven research specific to the Mediterranean region to fill existing knowledge gaps and support sustainable development.
